Fallen Angels or Risen Apes....!!

The arrogance of being at the top of the food chain makes us forget our simian roots. With the power to tame the atom, power to modify DNA and to customize genes for designer animals, power to tamper with Mother Nature… These actions nothing but reinforce that the monkey in our brain is still in full control of our so called rational and logical mind. Thinking ourselves to be God in waiting is the ultimate delusion we feed ourselves with while simultaneously working on creating weapons of mass annihilation !

Monkey or Man

Once when I was a kid, I was given an assignment to create a painting. I started with much enthusiasm and went ahead painting myriad motley colorful canvas. After all done I looked at my creation and suddenly I didn’t quite like it too much, it looked ugly and I was quite aghast. I got so much repulsed with that painting that I tore it away and trashed it.

So is it that the God made us and then got disillusioned with his creation and left us to perish on our own, or rather it was not God at all but a creator with powers like God who made us but we were a disappointment and he left us. Are we not that unfinished canvas of God, which he started with much hope and faith and it didn’t quite come out the way it was meant to be.

Looking at the scenario across the world today, looking at the dire state of humanity I cannot but think, God has forgotten and forsaken us. For He created us in His image but we got contaminated with the poisonous seed of evil and He abandoned us. Is He going to destroy His creation or would there be a second chance? An experiment gone wrong, the contamination is spread deep, and what happens with bad experiments - either it is scrapped and abandoned or destroyed and forgotten. The first and foremost recourse would be to abandon and leave us alone for an undecided time frame forced by the compulsions of disillusionment and utter revulsion. (again an emotional God). The other may be reboot and restart. That is to wipe the slate clean and start afresh. That would be one of the apocalyptic scenarios so often depicted in our religious books.

However, if it would have been God he would have known the end result of His endeavor, after all He is Omniscient. So it implies that it must be a creator a notch below the God.

In our arrogance we think ourselves to be fallen angels, yet we are but risen of apes. We have lofty dreams of enlightenment and yet we kill and maim our own brethren. The errant, deplorably sinful ways of our behavior is like ways of spoilt children and would lead any guardian or parent disillusioned, labeling us as a lost cause. Can we be the good children of God, of course all this assumes our behavior is akin to that of our creator/s. (again the underlying arrogance of thinking that some traits in us are those of our creator/s)

…….Or our treaties whatever they may be worth; our symphonies however seldom they may be played; our peaceful acres, however frequently they may be converted into battlefields; our dreams however rarely they may be accomplished. The miracle of man is not how far he has sunk but how magnificently he has risen. We are known among the stars by our poems, not our corpses.”

― Robert Ardrey, African Genesis

On the other hand it might also be that we are left to our own devices of struggling survival in the loneliness of cosmos. May be the creator/s would not like to bloody His/their hands when we ourselves are most capable of our self-destruction in spite of our so called higher intellect. Again that is to assume that the creator entity has concept of morality as we know it.

A recorded history of around 10k years is just a blink of an eye in the huge time scales of the Cosmos and it may just be a blink that would be sufficient enough to leave us all dead at our own hands. And then again the nature would rule in wild abandon without any human interaction or interference on this deserted planet, waiting for intelligent life forms to evolve and emerge and ponder upon the philosophy of existence, yet again !
